Selective pallet racking has a number of benefits that make it suitable to a wide array of storage needs including:

Why Use Selective Pallet Racking
Use selective pallet racking for storage situations where all stock needs to be accessed. Although this limits storage density, the trade off of being able to get to stock quickly and easily may be worth it for the specific storage scenario. Selective pallet racking also works well for businesses on a budget, as standard, unmodified selective pallet racking tends to be very affordable.
If your storage needs to be of higher density, there are a number of solutions that emphasise being able to store more pallets, but this comes at the cost of selectivity. Selective vs High-Density Racking
Selective racking gives up some storage density in exchange for direct access to every pallet. Whether that’s the right trade depends on how many products you store and how fast they move.
- Selective racking: every pallet is directly accessible by forklift. Best for warehouses with lots of SKUs, frequent picking and first-in, first-out (FIFO) stock rotation.
- Double-deep racking: stores pallets two deep, increasing capacity but halving direct access. Needs a reach truck with extending forks.
- Drive-in racking: forklifts drive into the racking to store pallets in deep lanes. Maximum density for large volumes of the same product, but works last-in, first-out (LIFO).
- Narrow aisle racking: keeps selective access but shrinks the aisles, so you fit more racking into the same floor space.

Selective Pallet Racking FAQs
Can I install selective racking myself?
We don’t recommend it. Under AS 4084-2023, racking must be installed to the manufacturer’s specifications, including correct floor fixing and load signage, and incorrect installation is one of the most common causes of racking failure. Our team handles professional pallet racking installation across Melbourne.
How often does selective racking need to be inspected?
AS 4084-2023 requires a formal inspection by a competent person at least every 12 months, with regular in-house checks in between. We provide AS 4084 pallet racking inspections and repairs.
How much weight can selective racking hold?
It depends on the beam length, the frame height and how far apart the beam levels are. We calculate the safe working load for your exact layout and sign every bay before installation starts.
