Cost-Effective High-Density Storage Solutions

Double Deep
Pallet Racking

Double deep pallet racking allows for the storage of pallets two deep, as the name suggests. While this means pallets at the back of the racking are inaccessible, it’s a good solution to drastically increase warehouse storage density with only minor loss of selectivity — and it works best in the right situations.

When to Choose Double Deep Pallet Racking

How Double Deep Racking Works

Since this type of racking is a first in, last out system, it tends to be most applicable for storage of items that don’t rely on stock rotation or are not prone to spoiling. With this in mind, this system tends to work best when the same SKU is stored on the same row.
So if a warehouse has few SKUs but lots of pallets, double deep racking may be a great solution while also being fairly cost effective.

Key Benefits of This System

Double deep pallet racking is perfect for situations where a warehouse is storing many of the same item. This way the inaccessibility of the pallets at the back aren’t a concern. Other benefits include:

  • Ability to easily double storage.
  • Cost effective when compared to other high density racking solutions.
  • Relatively fast loading and unloading, even when needed to access rear rack.

Why Use Double Deep Pallet Racking

Use this type of racking in storage situations that are likely to be high volume of fewer SKUs. Double deep pallet racking wouldn’t be an effective solution when there’s only one pallet of each SKU, since inevitably items will get stuck at the back of the pallet racking. For storage situations that have two or more pallets, the inaccessibility of the rear pallet isn’t a problem. The next pallet can then be easily moved forward once the first rack is removed.

If a business is considering relocating to a larger warehouse due to lack of space, It may be a good idea for that business to look into double deep pallet racking first. This is because everything is denser in double deep pallet racking. Aisles are still needed for access, but there’s fewer of them, overall optimising your warehouse layout.

Double deep racking will likely require some minor modifications to your forklifts so that they can extend back that far, but the investment is well worth the extra storage space.

All racking is inspected and rated in line with AS4084:2023 requirements.
